Is Invisalign Right For You?
While many of us have not-so-fond memories of braces, there also many of us who rejected the idea of a mouthful of metal and wires. Both of these groups of people can appreciate Invisalign, the invisible teeth braces – but is it right for you, and how does it work?
For countless crooked smiles, braces simply aren’t worth it. The daily pain and discomfort, the tugging and tightening and replacement of bands, and the obstacles between you and oral hygiene all add up to an image that makes you wonder timidly if your teeth are really that bad anyway.
Of course, nobody wants braces.
If you’ve ever experienced (or seen) someone struggle with food getting caught in braces, you’ll understand the many ways that braces can affect your lifestyle and confidence. However, crooked teeth can often be a symptom of a problem with jaw alignment, which can lead to pain further down the road if not remedied quickly. Straight teeth aren’t always for aesthetic purposes, although the effect of straight and sparkly teeth can be enough to make you smile.
How Does It Work?
When you start your journey with Invisalign, you receive a custom-made set of dental aligners, similar to a small clear mouthguard. These are light and clear, and fit closely to your teeth to remain as invisible and natural as possible. They gradually shift your teeth to a slightly different point, without the use of any wires or brackets. Every few weeks, as prescribed by your dentist, you’ll use a slightly different aligner to move your teeth a little further, and this will continue until your treatment is successfully complete.
The best part about Invisalign isn’t just about how easy they make your dental realignment, but how there is little disruption to your lifestyle. Dental appointments are usually much less regular than with traditional braces so you spend less time in the dental chair, and the clear aligners ensure that you’re comfortable and confident throughout your treatment. The Invisalign aligners can be removed for dining with friends, brushing and flossing, and other occasions where braces would get in the way.
Is It Right For Me?
Depending on your needs, Invisalign could help to straighten your smile. For extremely severe cases such as large overbites, Invisalign is simply too discreet to be able to solve problems – these cases would often require orthodontic procedures to realign the entire jaw. However, if your teeth are gapped or crowded, or your bite is slightly misaligned, Invisalign could be able to solve these problems.
Invisalign is perfect for people of nearly any age, although young teens or children may not be suitable as their teeth are still growing, and the Invisalign molds don’t account for tooth growth. However, older teens love Invisalign as it doesn’t pose the same problems with dental hygiene and self-presentation that braces have traditionally been haunted by. Many adults who avoided braces during their teenage years are now turning to Invisalign to straighten their teeth, now that they are comfortable knowing there won’t be any interference in their day-to-day life. If you are in those age groups and would like an easier, more comfortable option than braces, Invisalign could be perfect for you.
